Surgical Brow & Forehead Lifts

“I really didn’t tell a lot of people that I was having the procedure but more people just said that I looked happier well-rested. It was very subtle. It made me feel really empowered and really good about myself. I am just really glad I had it done.”
-Renee D.,Macomb Townsship

Q – Why would you want a brow lift?
A heavy brow tends to prematurely age both men and women. It causes many people to look fatigued and easily frustrated or angry-thouh this is not how they actually feel. Often patients think their upper eyelids are the cause of this look, but after consultation with Dr. Berkowitz they realize that a fallen brow position is the true culprit-especially when a patient has a hood-like appearance at the outer corners of the eyes.

Q Why would you want a forehead lift?
Patients who desire to change deep lines across the forehead and furrows between the brows will gain from a forehead lift-in a addition to what gains would result from repositioning a heavy brow.

Q How are these procedures performed?
Several techniques may be used to raise the brow. An thin incision may be placed directly above the eye brows-resulting in a more alert and rejuvenated expression yet leaving a telltale scar. Insurance companies on occasion will pay for this technique when the brow is so low that vision is impaired.

For a more cosmetically pleasing outcome, patients often elect a brow lift with a much less visible-if not entirely hidden-scar. By placing a thin incision along the crease of the upper eyelid, Dr Berkowitz is able to reposition the brow as well as remove excess sagging tissue from the upper lids-and once healed, any scarring is quite faint.

Raising a heavy forehead is slightly more complicated. Tiny incisions are hidden in the hairline. Then, Dr. Berkowitz uses endoscopic equipment (a small camera about the size of a pencil) to clearly see the tissue, nerves and muscles beneath the skin. With another thin instrument, Dr. Berkowitz is able to reposition the brow using a newer device, called an endotine.

Q What is the advantage of the endoscopic technique for raising the forehead vs. other methods?
Because of the smaller incision used during this procedure, in comparison to older techniques, patients of Dr. Berkowitzs experience less itching or numbness during the heeling process. They are also able to return to normal activities more quickly. Other advantages over traditional techniques include:

  • Not altering the hairline.
  • Less numbness due to smaller incision length
  • Less swelling and bruising.
  • Less scarring and minimal to no hair loss.

Q What is an endotine and why is it useful?
Once the brow or foreheads are repositioned, they must be tacked into place until healing occurs and the new connections are able to hold on their own. The endotine replaces the need to use sutures or screws, which remain the solution in traditional techniques and cause complications such as hair loss or irritation. With its unique design, Dr. Berkowitz is able to place the endotine through the tiny incisions of the upper eyelid or in the hairline where it will eventually dissolve on its own.

The endotine device is designed to help distribute tension and reduce areas of high stress, allowing Dr. Berkowitz greater aesthetic control you your brow height & shape.

Q – Is there a great deal of risk associated with brow or forehead lifts?
Both surgeries are performed on thousands of men & women each year-with few serious complications. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are clearly some risks. We take many steps to assure your safety during surgery and ask that you help minimize risks by following instructions both before and after surgery. Dr. Berkowitz clearly reviews all risks & instructions with all patients prior to brow lift surgery.

Q –How long does recovery take and what should you expect?
Immediately after surgery, patients will likely have some bruising and swelling. This typically fades within the first couple of weeks. Ice packs help reduce the swelling and also reduce discomfort. Some patients may have itching or numbness at the incision sites during the healing process. Traditional brow lift techniques require about two weeks for recovery, but patients can expect an even quicker recovery with our advanced techniques.

Most patients are thrilled with their immediate results even if before the swelling resolves. Complete healing does take time, but most patients see final results within just a few months well worth the wait.

Q How long will you benefit from a surgical brow or forehead lift?
The length of time patients see results will vary. Factors such as heredity and lifestyle and certainly play an important role. The hands of time will continue, even though we are turning them back.
